Story

Spectacular sovereign

The Perth Mint’s Australia sovereign is a modern tribute to Australia’s first sovereign.  In 1855 the Sydney Mint was opened and empowered to convert Australian gold into sovereigns, which until this time had been the exclusive right of the Royal Mint. To differentiate the Sydney Mint sovereigns from the imperial coins a new design was developed. Today’s Perth Mint sovereign depicts the unique elements of that historic design, St Edwards crown and a laurel wreath along with the place of manufacture, denomination and the word Australia.  The significance of these elements and the finished coin will appeal to sovereign collectors around the world.

Historical sovereign design

The commemorative 2014 Australia sovereign portrays the St Edwards crown, a laurel wreath and the word AUSTRALIA, each are historic elements of Leonard Charles Wyon’s original Type I reverse. This modern tribute also includes the inscriptions PERTH MINT and SOVEREIGN.
