Historic coin
First issued in 1489, the sovereign was named after its magnificent portrayal of then monarch, Henry VII. Following a 200-year hiatus, the coin was revived in 1817 under George III as a circulating piece with a nominal value of one pound sterling (£1). Modern bullion versions are also issued in proof and other collector finishes.
Pistrucci’s masterpiece
Continuing a long-standing tradition, this sovereign portrays St George and the Dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci, the famous Italian medallist and engraver whose association with the Royal Mint spanned 40 years. Also included on the reverse is the coin’s 2024 year-date.
King Charles III obverse
The obverse portrays the first definitive UK coinage portrait of His Majesty The King by Martin Jennings – the first time it has been paired with Pistrucci’s classic design on a proof sovereign.
Presentation packaging
The coin is accompanied by packaging detailing the history of the sovereign, and the stories of St George and the Dragon, Benedetto Pistrucci, and King Charles III.
