Story

Highly symbolic

In traditional Chinese culture, the serpent-like dragon is revered as a divine creature and potent symbol of power, wealth, and good fortune. Chinese art often depicts a pair of dragons chasing or fighting over a pearl, a symbol of wisdom and immortality. To be born in the Year of the Dragon, including 2024 and every 12th preceding year, is considered particularly lucky.

Mother of pearl insert

The coin portrays two dragons on a background of clouds, representing their heavenly realm. The mythical creatures surround a precision carved mother of pearl centrepiece featuring a three-dimensional 18-carat gold representation of the Chinese character for ‘dragon’. As well as the inscriptions ‘YEAR OF THE DRAGON’, the reverse includes a ‘P125’ mintmark signifying The Perth Mint’s 125th anniversary. Also included is the coin’s weight, purity, and year-date.
