Highly symbolic

In traditional Chinese culture, the serpent-like dragon is revered as a divine creature and potent symbol of power, wealth, and good fortune. Chinese art often depicts a pair of dragons chasing or fighting over a pearl, a symbol of wisdom and immortality. To be born in the Year of the Dragon, including 2024 and every 12^th preceding year, is considered particularly lucky.

Mother of pearl insert

The coin portrays two dragons on a background of clouds, representing their heavenly realm. The mythical creatures surround a precision carved mother of pearl centrepiece featuring a three-dimensional 18-carat gold representation of the Chinese character for ‘dragon’. As well as the inscriptions ‘YEAR OF THE DRAGON’, the reverse includes a ‘P125’ mintmark signifying The Perth Mint’s 125^th anniversary. Also included is the coin’s weight, purity, and year-date.
