Mighty eagle

This coin is struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver in proof quality and celebrates one of Australia's most incredible birds of prey, the wedge-tailed eagle. These majestic birds have an impressive wingspan up to 2.7 metres and can reach altitudes of up to 2,000 metres.

John M. Mercanti design

The coin’s reverse depicts an impressive Wedge-tailed Eagle perching on a tree branch. The design also includes the inscription AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE, the 2017 year-date and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. For this design, The Perth Mint commissioned American sculptor and engraver, John M. Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. Mercanti is renowned for his American Silver Eagle coin design and has produced more coin and medal designs than any other employee in the history of the U.S. Mint.
