Iconic wild horse

Brumbies are descended from stock thought to have escaped from their early colonial owners. Energetic, independent, and ideally adapted to the rugged conditions of the Australian Alps, brumbies are seen by many as symbolic of our national character.

Spirited brumby design

The coin portrays a spirited brumby with a raised hoof. The horse is standing beside a tree that is shedding its bark – a regular occurrence in the lifecycle of many Australian eucalypts. As well as fallen branches, the design includes strappy leafed native flora. The inscription ‘AUSTRALIAN BRUMBY’, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, and the coin’s weight, fineness, and 2023 year-date also appear on the reverse.
