First winner of story competition announced
The Perth Mint has been calling on people to share their Perth Mint story as part of its 125th anniversary celebrations with entries to the competition flowing in from around the world.
Eager to share their memories, entries have detailed why the iconic WA mint shares a special place in their hearts.
None more so than our first winner John Axon, who dropped into the Mint last week to collect his prize – our special 125th anniversary 1oz silver proof coin featuring the iconic trio of Australian fauna – the koala, kangaroo and kookaburra.
John, his wife Nicola and daughters Ruby and Daisy moved to Perth from Derbyshire in England in 2009 and are building their own family tradition which involves gifting our products as treasured keepsakes.
His story really brought home how The Perth Mint is valued by people in the Western Australian community and how the precious metals minted products we make have appeal across the generations.
John’s story in his own words
“My favourite memory of The Perth Mint is one involving my beautiful two daughters, Ruby and Daisy. We started a new life in Perth 15 years ago and 10 years ago became very proud citizens,” he wrote.
“To celebrate this, we had a day at the Mint and they chose a special memento.
“They both chose the same thing – a silver coin with an opal kangaroo in a special box that when opened a light came on and lit up the opal and its most beautiful colours.”

My daughters will quite often open up the box (the lights still come on, amazingly).
“For all the family this is emblematic of this beautiful and rich country we chose to move to all those years ago. They associate The Perth Mint with something timeless, solid and dependable, and that’s why for their Mum and Dad’s 25th (silver) wedding anniversary in June this year they chose to buy us a 1kg cast silver bar to commemorate the occasion."
“I am sure this will not be the last milestone we decide to mark with something precious from The Perth Mint.”
