Jimi Hendrix is widely regarded as the greatest and most influential electric guitar player of all time. Even though his superstar status spanned just four years, his innovative style, mesmerising stage presence, and dazzling technique were simply revolutionary.

Born on 27 November 1942 in Seattle, Washington, Jimi acquired his first guitar at the age of 15. Influenced by diverse music genres, notably blues and rock and roll, he soon formed his first band. Early in his career he became a backing musician for several high-profile performers but earned little personal recognition.

A move to London in September 1966, however, heralded the meteoric rise of Jimi’s fortunes. Taking Britain by storm with band The Jimi Hendrix Experience, he began an intense period of astonishing creativity with Purple Haze, Little Wing, Spanish Castle Magic, Machine Gun and Voodoo Child (Slight Return), to name a few of his legendary recordings.

America fell in love with Jimi Hendrix at Monterey in 1967. Seeing Jimi live was unforgettable. Giving unfettered expression to his unique guitar sound, the maestro brought the wildly enthusiastic audience to a frenzy. In a sign of more iconic stage performances to follow, he set light to his guitar during Wild Thing, and changed popular music forever.

Aged 27, singer, songwriter and guitarist extraordinaire, Jimi Hendrix passed away in 1970. A ground-breaker, a genius, an all-time great, his name is burned into the annals of music history.

Behind the design

From his humble beginnings in Seattle to his grand performances that cemented his status as a music icon, Hendrix's journey was as remarkable as his music. Now, we give you an opportunity to hold a piece of this legend's legacy in your hands, with the exclusive release of the Jimi Hendrix ™ 2025 1oz Silver Proof Coloured Coin.

Struck from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver, the design includes a coloured photo of Jimi Hendrix playing his famous electric guitar at the Northern California Folk-Rock Festival in San Jose, California, in May 1969. He is wearing flamboyant clothing synonymous with the 60s era, including a patterned bandana around his head. The design includes a purple and pink psychedelic pattern and the inscription ‘Jimi Hendrix’ in orange handwritten lettering.

The Jimi Hendrix coin is the third instalment of 1oz silver coins highlighting musical icons following Bon Scott and Aretha Franklin.

Coin Designer, Wade Robinson says, “The brief for this design was to think outside the box and be creative. With this in mind, I wanted to ‘break the mould’ of our previous music coin designs (pose, signature, name) and try something new.”

Wade says he went through many concepts for the coin design featuring iconic Hendrix looks. “I reviewed images from ‘Woodstock’ with tasselled sleeves and a scarf around his head, as well as images of him crouched & setting his guitar on fire at the Monterey Festival.”

“But after research and deliberation on the image of Jimi, I went with a photo taken at a concert in Santa Clara County Fairgrounds as it had such a dynamic pose that enhanced the movement and flow of the coin design. I wanted to also pay homage to one of Jimi’s songs within the design and created a psychedelic swirling pattern to symbolise the “Purple Haze” emanating from his guitar and the swirls around the coin. Overall, I’m very happy in how the coin and packaging turned out for this coin and look forward to seeing how it is received by the collector community.”

Perfect for any music lover or coin collector, this striking coin serves as a stunning tribute to a true icon. With no more than 5,000 of the Jimi Hendrix™ 2025 1oz Silver Proof Coloured Coin available, we recommend ordering soon before it sells outs.
