Coloured coin from The Perth Mint honours Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo is one of Mexico's greatest artists. Renowned for the use of vibrant colours, her paintings are celebrated for their attention to Mexican and Indigenous culture, and universally admired for their depictions of the female experience and form.
Her body of work includes many self-portraits reflecting the terrible pain and suffering she experienced throughout life. Defying simple categorisation, her style has been deemed surrealist, or akin to magic realist. Despite these comparisons, it is undeniable she broke the artistic mould in a unique way.
Frida Kahlo was born on 6 July 1907 near Mexico City. She contracted polio at the age of six, the disease leaving her with a limp. Tragedy struck again in 1925 when she was seriously injured in a bus crash. Impaled by a steel handrail, she was to remain childless for life.
During months of recovery, Frida found salvation in painting and finished her first self-portrait the following year. Prominent Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, who she first met as a school student, encouraged her artistic pursuits. In 1929 they entered into a tumultuous marriage which Frida chronicled in a number of works.
Undergoing many surgeries, suffering extreme physical and emotional pain, Frida painted until the end. In 1954, at just 47, her death was reported from a pulmonary embolism, but speculation remains that she died by her own hand. Her struggles, her passion for Mexico, and her support of women’s rights created a legacy which continues to resonate with people from all walks of life.
To commemorate 70 years since her tragic passing, The Perth Mint has launched the limited edition Frida Kahlo 2024 2oz Silver Coloured Antiqued Coin.
The coin’s reverse includes a coloured portrait of the much-loved artist created by the Frida Kahlo Corporation, the organisation dedicated to educating, sharing, and preserving her legacy and image. Designed by our talented in-house designer, Natasha Muhl, the coin symbolises Frida’s indomitable spirit. The bold, expressive and beautiful work captures the essence of her vibrant soul.
In addition, the coin has been individually ‘antiqued’ to give it a unique finish conveying the surface abrasions of an ancient artefact. The packaging includes a vibrant, coloured box with a striking portrait of Frida, and is accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
With a limited mintage of 3000, this coin is a must-have for art lovers and collectors alike.
